Nigeria, with an estimated population of 140million in 2006, is projected to reach 161.7million by 2015, the target date set for achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The percentage of people living in the urban areas is 47%, while 53% of the population lives in the rural areas.
The Nigerian National Policy on water and sanitation targets with regards to Rural Water supply and sanitation (RWSS) is as shown in the table below.

It has been estimated that the total investment needed to achieve these MDG targets by 2020, for the estimated rural population is calculated as US$2.5 billion annual investment.
